How the time is spent

  1. Part 1

Theory modules (runs with Part 2, theory exam)

  2. Part 2

Practical training (workbook, observation and assessment)

  3. Part 3

Workplace modules (external or onsite, observation and logbook)

  4. External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA)

The difference

What makes this different.

Most AI programmes stop at what a neural network is. Zaio's modules have you building AI products with real users before you graduate:

Zaio-exclusive

The qualification is registered on the NQF at Level 5 (SAQA ID 118792) and issued by the QCTO after the national EISA exam. Zaio's modules on top are what let you take a business problem and ship a working AI solution.

Ship AI products from day one

You'll leave this programme having built and deployed multiple working AI systems — chatbots, RAG apps, agents, computer vision demos — with real users testing them.

Beyond the curriculum

From LangChain and MCPs to fine-tuning and multi-agent frameworks, you'll master tools that most AI engineers only touch years into their careers.

AI and a modern stack

Learn Python, cloud deployment, vector databases and modern MLOps alongside classical ML. You leave fluent in both the theory and the toolchain.

A portfolio that sells

Graduate with a public GitHub, deployed demos and a technical writeup for each project. Employers can see and test your work before the interview.

Outcomes

Where this takes you.

Graduates work as AI application developers, machine learning engineers and AI-focused full-stack developers, or lead AI adoption inside existing teams.

FAQ

Questions about the AI & ML Engineer occupational certificate.

(01)Is this AI course accredited?
Zaio Technology (Pty) Ltd, trading as Zaio Institute of Technology, is a QCTO-accredited Skills Development Provider. This particular qualification is not yet on our accreditation letters, so we make no accreditation claim for it here. Ask an advisor where it stands before you apply.
(02)What does an AI engineer do?
An AI engineer designs, builds, tests and deploys software that uses machine learning models and large language models: prediction systems, chat assistants, retrieval systems, agents and automations. This qualification covers each of those stages, with workplace modules for design, testing and deployment.
(03)Do I need a maths or coding background?
No. The entry requirement is Grade 12 with Mathematical Literacy or an NQF Level 4 qualification, and the programme teaches Python from zero and the mathematics and statistics you need inside the curriculum.
(04)How long is the AI engineer course?
Eighteen months, combining theory, practical training, workplace modules and the national EISA exam.
(05)What is the difference between this certificate and the Fullstack AI Engineer bootcamp?
The bootcamp is seven months and teaches you to build AI-powered web applications. The certificate is an 18-month national qualification at NQF Level 5 that goes deeper into machine learning, deep learning, fine-tuning and MLOps and includes workplace modules and a national exam.
(06)What does it cost?
R57,950 per year for two years, or from R5,650 a month, plus the EISA exam fee of about R6,000 paid separately.
(07)Can I learn AI for free instead?
You can learn a lot for free online, and we encourage it. What you cannot get for free is a nationally registered qualification, live instruction, mentor feedback, workplace experience and a national exam, which is what this programme adds.
(08)Will I get a job after the programme?
Zaio does not guarantee a job. You graduate with a national qualification, a portfolio of deployed AI systems and workplace experience, and career services help with your CV, portfolio and interviews.
(09)Who can apply?
Grade 12 (competency in English and Mathematical Literacy), OR NQF Level 4 qualification You apply online and an advisor will confirm you meet the entry rules before you enrol.
(10)How long does it take?
1.5–2 years, made up of part 1 (theory modules (runs with part 2, theory exam)), part 2 (practical training (workbook, observation and assessment)), part 3 (workplace modules (external or onsite, observation and logbook)), external integrated summative assessment (eisa) ().
(11)What do I graduate with?
Occupational Certificate: Artificial Intelligence Software Developer, NQF Level 5 (SAQA ID 118792). Zaio is accredited by the QCTO, so the qualification is registered on the National Qualifications Framework.
(12)When does it start?
Applications close 25 Mar 2027 and the programme starts 31 Mar 2027.
(13)How do I apply?
choose a programme, apply online, speak to an advisor, secure your place. The application itself takes about five minutes.
